19 апреля 2023 года был призван в вооружённые силы Российской Федерации. Служба была в 138 мотострелковой бригаде в Ленинградской области.

Принял присягу 3 июня, а 24 июня подписал контракт. 12 августа Зайцев Матвей направлен в служебную командировку в с.Тишанка Белгородскую область, а 8 сентября 2023 года Матвей Александрович Зайцев погиб.
